Getting Around - Johannesburg - South Africa

Jhb International Airport
YOUR first stop on any trip to South Africa is likely to be Johannesburg International Airport, the hub of all air travel on the sub-continent. Its also the busiest airport in Africa: about 13 million passengers pass through it each year.

Rent a Car
Unfortunately (for us living here) the public transport in Johannesburg is lacking. The best is to rent a car - remember to drive on the left hand side of the road!

Minibus Taxis
An informal network of minibus taxis operate in most areas but visitors will find this very difficult to use - a system of hand signs etc is used to indicate where to go which is only known by the community using it.

Taxi Tips

Busses
Busses do not operate in most areas e.g. suburbs therefore: rent a car - coming from Europe or the States you will find it and the petrol very cheap.

Bus Services

Local train services in the city
TRAINS are the cheapest form of public transport in Johannesburg. The downside is that while the city has sprawled to the north, the only lines run south of the centre, from the East Rand through to Soweto and Randfontein in the far west.
