George is at the center of Natures Garden Route and nestles at the foot of the Outeniqua Mountains. George is located in the Cape Wildflower Floral Kingdom next to the coast at the eastern end of the Western Cape Province and has a low rainfall Mediterranean type climate with activities to keep you busy all year round.
George is the largest town of the Garden Route. It is locate in the Western Cape just south of Oudtshoorn. The setting of town is pretty with the magnificent Outeniqua Mountain range dominating the city, and rivers , rich farmlands, forests and wild flowers surrounding it on all sides. Nature, outdoor and scenery is what you come here for.
Forestry is the backbone of the areas economy and, in addition to exotic species, large tracts of indigenous forest have been preserved. Hops grown in the countryside around George and the well-watered valleys in the Outeniqua Mountains supply about half of South Africas needs. It is possible to make incredible hikes and treks in the mountains. And if you are tired of walking just go to the beach - some of the nicest beaches with nice warm water are just a few km away.
George 5 miles [8km] inland and useful mainly as a terminus for the famous George to Knysna train ride, the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe. The views are stunning but the return trip is 7.5 hours.
