Whales
South Africa

Plettenberg Bay - Garden Route      >   South Africa

Whale Watching
Although one can often see whales from the beach, the ideal vantage point is on an elevated ridge or high point overlooking the ocean. One can see a great deal with the naked eye, but a pair of binoculars definitely enhances the experience. One can then see the details of the whale and its fascinating behaviour. In the Greater Plett Area, there are a number of good viewing sites.

Plettenberg Park
Guest is treated to a spectacular display from their cliff top view of whales and dolphins as they pass.

Robberg Peninsula

(From town go down Odland Street, over Piesang River Bridge, turn right at the little circle, and then first left into Robberg Road from which the Robberg Peninsula is clearly sign posted)
At the parking area one gets a wonderful view on both sides of the peninsula and, if one is a little more energetic, all along this coastal hiking trail there are high points from which one can clearly see the whales.

No 1 Beachy Head Drive

As one turns into Beachy Head Drive from Beacon Island Crescent, at the top of the hill, turning sharply left, there is a little parking area from which Central beach can be clearly seen as well as out towards Keurbooms.

Beachy Head Drive

The little park between Robberg 4 and Robberg 5 gives one a far, clear view over Robberg Beach up to the Peninsula and a far view of Keurbooms.

Beacon Island Rocks

A number of boat trips to see the whales on their own turf leave from Central Beach.

Van Plettenberg Monument

Meeding Street (from town, drive Odland Street, turn left into Meeding Street, and then almost immediately right into Hopwood Street. The monument is on your left, overlooking the Old Timber Shed) It gives a clear view over Hobie Beach and as far as Keurbooms.

Lookout Rocks

Directly accessible from the bottom end of Church Street or take a leisurely walk along Central or Hobie beach to the Rocks. (Climbing can be steep so not recommended for trail or unfit folks)

The Lookout Viewsite

Here there is also an information board about the whales. From Main Street, turn left into Swiftsure Street-this leads you to the whale viewing site.

Keurboomstrand

There are wonderful vantage points to clearly see the whales at play. Dolphins Point is a very popular spot to watch these magnificent creatures from. Take the N2 towards Port Elizabeth. Turnoff clearly indicated.
