Organisers of this years Pick n Pay Oyster & Wine Mardi Gras sponsored by Tabasco have announced that participants in this annual Oyster Festival event will once again be required to present cooked oysters at the competition.

In previous years, because the event is hosted in a marquee, it was considered a fire risk to use gas cookers. An innovative product known as an induction cooker, which heats the surface of the cooking utensil (pot or pan) using electromagnetic fields, will be used to solve this problem and at the same time conserve power and energy.

The event, which involves up to 25 local chefs preparing cooked oysters for a crowd of about 800 guests, has been a resounding success in the past and is one of the highlights of the annual Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival.

Event director Gino Adriaensen says that he is keen to bring hot cooking back. We will provide each food stand with an induction cooker and the participants will be required to cook and present their oysters hot.  The chef who produces the tastiest oyster wins.

At last years event 42 food and wine exhibitors offered a total of 18 000 oysters and 1 250 litres of wine to 800 people.  The Best Oyster Dish was awarded to Tarragons, a restaurant in George, for their light and refreshing Oyster with a Twist, the Best Wine Stand was awarded to Zidela Wines and the Best Oyster Stand went to Margot Swiss, also based in George.  A staggering R98,000 was raised for Knysna Child Welfare, the Knysna Sea Cadets and the Bill Gallagher Development Fund.

The event will take place on Wednesday 8 July 2009 in the Heineken Pavilion, Loerie Park Festival Hub, Knysna.

This years judges are South African Chefs Association Garden Route Chairman, Martyn Hill; Vice Chairman, Gino Adriaensen; Judging Officer and Baillie Dlgu of the Chane des Rtisseurs Bailliage DOuteniqua, Francois Ferreira; Vice-Conseiller Culinaire Carol Wicht; Karen du Plessis (Unilever); Hillary Blowe (Chipkins); and Pieter Cloete (PAC Produksies).

Judging of the event will once again be according to the strict criteria of the Chaine des Rtisseurs.

For more information about the event contact Gino Adriaensen on 082 674 0182 or Pieter Cloete on 076 521 2478.
